Harvesting
The growth cycle of rain-fed bamboos in Maharashtra generally begins in the month of July-August i.e. rhizomes start sprouting in that season. Most of the varieties in Maharashtra being of sympodial type, bamboos grow in clusters.
At the time of harvesting of all the sympodial varieties it is observed that bamboos are harvested only after three rainy seasons that makes it almost mature for use. The incidence of pests and other diseases minimizes in case of a mature bamboo.
Though it is difficult to harvest the bamboos in the core sector of the cluster, few methods can be adopted to do so. Generally, bamboo is harvested above the first node which prevents infection going through to the root system from the remnant of the harvested pole.
